Men’s Cargo Shorts. I hate them. The well-known clothing item holds a somewhat negative connotation to its name, conjuring up images of dads (my dad owns a seemingly limitless amount of cargo shorts) wearing polo shirts and cargo shorts.
So, if I hate cargo shorts so much, why am I wearing them?
When I was back in Colorado a few weeks ago, I went on somewhat of a thrifting haul with my sister. While we were at a Goodwill outlet store searching through piles of used clothing, I found this pair of shorts. I can’t explain exactly why or how they caught my attention-especially with the added fact that they were missing a button-but for some reason, I picked them up and knew I had to style an outfit around them. I had to challenge myself to wear something that made me cringe a little.
After trying out many iterations of outfit ideas, the shorts I once dismissed as ugly and reserved for dads grew on me. There’s something about creating such an unconventional look that excites me to push past my “fashion boundaries.”
For this look, however, I wanted to contrast the practical, boyish look of the shorts by pairing them with an ultra-feminine silk blouse and pearl earrings. I threw in a little edge with my snakeskin Steve Madden boots and matching belt and there you have it. Men’s cargo shorts. Made fashion.
