So you’ve been watching What not to Wear for the past year and are finally ready to give yourself the makeover you so desperately deserve. You know your messy wardrobe is affecting the way other people see you and even how you see yourself, and you want to showcase your personality through your style. But, there’s one little problem…you have no idea where to start.
While transforming your style can sound extremely daunting, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to do the whole What Not to Wear sha-bang (i.e. throw out all your clothes and buy all new ones) in order to do it right. You just have to create a new way of looking at the clothes you already have.
That’s why I created a little guide for you in order to help you enter 2019 feeling more stylish, and therefore more confident in yourself.
Hopefully some of these tips will help!
1. Start with Basics
This one is somewhat of a given, but in order to create a masterpiece of your style, you’ll need to have a strong foundation to start off with. There are a few classics that I recommend that are great for pairing with statement pieces or just creating an effortlessly chic look. These include a pair of plain, well-fitting jeans, black trousers, a white button-up shirt, a white t-shirt, a black blouse, a pea-coat/dress coat, black boots, and white sneakers. As you can tell, these are all neutral colors to create a great base to build upon.
2. Know your Shape
Shape/tailoring truly is everything when it comes to how a piece of clothing makes you feel. If it highlights your features, chances are it will make you feel more comfortable and beautiful in that clothing item. For example, if you want to showcase your small waist you might belt a dress to cinch your waist in. Shape is also something to consider when creating an outfit. Typically, a good rule of thumb is to pair a loose-fitting piece with a more structured or body-hugging piece. Of course, rules are meant to be broken (especially in the fashion world), but if you’re new to this, this little guideline may be helpful to you.
3. Add in Color
When I’m putting together an outfit, I always make sure to have some pop of color to give it a little special touch. Not to mention, wearing bright colors gives you a boost of confidence, even if you’re not feeling so hot. Figure out how you want to bring in a little color to your outfit. Maybe you love wearing bold, statement pieces and want to try out a colorful dress or a bright jacket. Or maybe you’re more neutral-focused and want to just bring it out in little accents like a bright bag or a colored shoe.
4. Play with Pattern
Along with color, patterns help make an outfit interesting and unique. They’re also a great way to stay on trend, as pattern trends come and go. And, if you’re really daring, I would recommend to try and mix patterns for a chic and fashionable look. The key to mixing patterns is finding ones within the same color scheme and contrasting more intricate patterns with simpler ones. For example, a thin striped button-down would pair nicely with a busier floral skirt.
5. Throw in some Texture
In order to create a stylish wardrobe, you want to incorporate different textures into your closet. I usually see interesting textures as an opportunity for the perfect finish to an outfit. For example, a plain white blouse and a pair of black jeans seem boring until you add on a fur coat. Or a floral dress seems girly and basic until you strap on some studded sandals.
6. HAVE FUN WITH IT
Out of all of these tips, this is the most important one. Your style is YOUR style, nobody else’s. At the end of the day, you should be wearing what makes you feel happy and confident, not wearing certain things just to please other people or to be on trend. Yes, there are looks that are more appropriate at certain times than others, but as for mixing and matching, the best advice I can give you is to treat creating an outfit as an art. And when an outfit makes you feel great inside, it shows on the outside.
